STEM subjects form the basis of engineering but if you love other subjects then I think you should study them. I studied French and Spanish at GCSE so now when I travel with work I am able to use the language to make it easier. If you enjoy art/design/IT then they all lend themselves to certain types of engineering so I would encourage you to stick with them – the most important thing is to study what you enjoy

I did Philosophy at GCSE and A-Level. I think that this is probably one of the best things I did. Not necessarily from a religion point of view, but from an argument point of view. It helped me learn how to formulate a solid argument, which in effect is what engineering is all about.

I think the mos important thing to do is pick subjects that you love. You are more likely to work harder in subjects where you enjoy the work. For example at A-Level I didn’t take Physics because I didn’t enjoy it at AS-Level and didn’t really like the teaching so instead I took up Geology and Geography because I liked the subjects and loved the teachers, I really think this was the main reason I did well. As long as you have the core subjects such as Maths and Sciences, you will be OK. During my career and interview processes I have found that good grades are more important than the actaul subject
