I try to be but I think I am about average in the “smart” department. I suspect the best way to be smart is to be informed as the better informed you are the more likely are to make good decisions. I also like to think that it possible to make yourself smarter. A useful tool for improving your own smartness is critical thinking, whereby you break down information and look for the evidence that either supports or contradicts it.
I think I’m smart enough but I am aware there are smarter people that I am. For example, I had this conversation with my partner who has Phd and he constantly learns something new, especially about Maths. I said he is more intelligent than me in all science stuff and he said I’m more intelligent in human relations haha… whatever that meant, he could not explain either…
I have taken Mensa IQ test and got 121 score which isn’t enough to get to the club (it would have to be 130 or above) but it is 14% global population.
Sometimes, other times I can completely lack common sense and can’t remember what I did yesterday or have been known to hit myself in the face with a spanner. I wouldn’t say I’m smart. I may be more capable in some areas than others, but equally there are people far more talented and lot better at other things that I am! I may be able to solve the devilish Sudoku or do some fairly complicated maths, but give me a pencil and a ruler and I will struggle to draw a straight line and don’t even get me started on what would happen if I tried to sing…..Everyone has their own skills and talents that make them unique and that I admire and respect. It’s a combination of all of these things and the people we work work that can really drive things forward and help solve some of the toughest problems.
I have good days and bad days! But I think engineering teaches you good skills, to think of a design, test the design, and modify the design until it works, these skills that can be applied to many areas of life, and certainly provide a “smart” approach.
I think from the answers and by the professions, we are in, you can say we are smart… one of the definitions of smart is “having or showing a quick-witted intelligence”. I think we all have it… Yes, there might be a moment (or two) that our actions like hitting ourselves with spanner in a face (Hollie) or walking into a bus stop post while looking at a friend still in the bus and making a whole buss laugh at you (me) don’t make us look smart but we still are 😉
