• Question: Who is your favourite Engineer, and why?

      I don’t know if I have a favourite, there are too many to list that I have an incredible amount of respect and am thankful for. From a scientific principles and understanding view you’ve got people like Newton and Einstein, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, Marie Curie and Crick and Watson, women of NASA such as Margaret Hamilton and Nancy Grace Roman, (which is also the most amazing lego set), through to modern day pioneers such as Elon Musk. All of these and many, many more have helped to inspire me and many more in the modern day world and I can only hope to in my career contribute even a fraction of what they have in bettering our understanding. Do you have a favourite?

      I don’t think I have a favourite engineer. One that comes to my mind is Kate Hall who used to work for Arup in the same office that I am and she has been Woman of the Year – Women in Construction 2010; Lloyds First Women Awards Winner 2011. Although I would not say she is my favourite engineer, as I don’t have one, I believe she would be a great example, especially for girls, to follow.

      There many famous scientist but few famous engineers. I would say that Brunel did some amazing things in his time and by doing so changed our country completely. I think Elon Musk could prove to following in the footsteps of great engineers but I don’t know how “hands on” he is or whether he is really more of an ideas person. The reason I admire Brunel so much is that he was very hands on and didn’t mine getting dirty if it meant the job was done to his very exacting standards.
