I would not describe myself as a scientist as I am not researching original areas of work. As an Engineer I am looking at the technology available to see if it can meet the requirements of work proposed. Why did I wanted to do Engineering, probably the great sense of achievement when something I have worked on for maybe several years starts to do what it was intended to to. It then has a life of its own.
I always enjoyed science and maths at school, so it was natural for me to continue in these subjects. I moved to engineering during my work life to work on spacecraft.
Starting with an idea that develops into a system that can land on Mars is an amazing feeling!
I was alsways fascinated by space from a young age, and my love of science fiction made me want to build spacecraft. Maths and science were always my favourite subjects at school as I liked solving problems and understanding how things worked. Sicence and engineering is a really rewarding career as you can see when things succeed and understand when they don’t. Everyday is a different challenge an you get the opportunity to be involved in some really exciting and interesting projects! I also really enjoy doing practical things and getting my hands dirty and luckily my job allows me to that so I’m not sitting at a desk all day.
It’s exciting. You learn about the world, what drives it, you have a chance to make a difference. You get to take part in shaping the world around you.
Even if it is a part that seems small like analysis data about for example crime, which then potentially helps for the police force to be distributed more efficiently and therefore there is a better chance to prevent it. Each of us improves the environment we live in.
Science gives you a possibility to constantly learn new things, which makes it so exciting.
In my profession, I often help other departments with GIS technology to solve their problems better, quicker and in more innovative ways. This is when the job gets rewarding when these people you helped will show their gratitude and often will spread the word about your skills, which kind of can make you “famous” haha.
