I don’t feel like I’m changing it dramatically. But it is nice to contribute in a small way to making the treatment of sick people more effective. Nobody wants to get sick, so being able to improve the experience or help the doctor to treat the condition more effectively is satisfying. Honestly though, I don’t often think of the project like that. I enjoy the technical challenge. It is questions like this that help to make me see the work we do a bit differently.

I feel I’m contributing to that change even if my contribution is very small. I think as a whole group we make a positive change and hopefully our work helps the next generation of engineers to make even more changes. It’s only thanks to the old scientists and engineers that we’ve been able to get to where were are. It would be very difficult if we didn’t have electricity for example!

To some extent, yes. I am very pleased to have worked on thousands of cases where patients have benefited from techniques I’ve developed. I’m also pleased to have widely published and presented my work so others can copy and learn from it. In academia, this is the greatest achievement – telling people about your work and inspiring others to theirs better.

Of course, I work as part of a team who all have the same ambitions, which helps.
