We work in a relaxed environment but it is still work. Sometimes we’ll have a chat about a topic not related to what we are paid for though!
If it is somebody’s birthday we will have tea and cake. Once a year we have a summer barbecue too.
At lunchtime I prefer to relax and eat. Some of the other people I work with will go for a run instead. As long as we work enough hours in the day we are lucky to be able to organise our time quite flexibly.
Work at university is a bit more relaxed than in other workplaces. We can have a lot of chats during our normal working hours, sometimes while making a cup of coffee. They’re really useful to share ideas, get advice or start working on a project together.
I’m sure some of these questions are from my boss…
The working environment in a hospital can be very busy so any downtime of the scanners or servers etc really affects the medical staff’s ability to do their job. This means my busiest times are when things have gone kaput!
Only time that I make available for things like this. I’m in the fortunate position to be quite flexible about what I do – I relish being able to identify a challenge and give myself something to do in order to overcome it (some people call it research). This means any ‘free’ time is filled with something hopefully useful.
