Designs are always led from a brief generated primarily from the prescribing specialist (surgeon for implants, prosthetist of physio for worn prostheses). I use a combination of computer aided design tools, the primary one being a fantastic software called Freeform. This is analogous to computer sculpting where you can feel the virtual clay through a stylus interface (a haptic). This enables the design of very complex geometries, the addition of textures and engineered components within one software. The output is usually a .stl file, which describes the parts as a surface made up of connected triangles. This is a defacto format used for 3D printed fabrication. I use a variety of materials including titanium, epoxy-based resin and low cost PLA or soft TPU materials to fabricate the end result depending on what the prosthesis has to do.
