How much an engineer earns depends on the field of engineering, where they work and how many years experience they have so I can’t give you a single figure.
I earn enough to live comfortably and I’m happy with what I have. Engineers won’t earn as much as some other jobs, but depending on their achievements and years of experience, they can achieve a very good salary. Engineers can also make money if their devices are successful and get sold.

Engineers are not always as well paid as other jobs. It is possible to live well as an Engineer though. The amount someone in my job gets paid depends on how much experience they have.
I’m very happy with my salary.
If you work as an engineer for a big company then you will probably earn more than as an engineer in a university. The work is different though – maybe with less freedom to be creative.
Most engineers do their job because they like it rather than because they can earn a lot of money in a short career.

Personally, I earn enough to be happy without having too much undue stress. I work in academia, but am also commercial-facing. This means I get some of the benefits associated with researching for research sake (usually for a good cause I must say) whilst appreciating what needs to be done to commercialise an idea. It’s a healthy balance, but the pay in academia is arguably not as good as purely commercial.
Engineering encompasses a huge spectrum of specialties with associated scales of pay depending on experience and industry.
