The thing that I get from Engineering is an understanding of how all kinds of different things work. From my studies and professional experience I have some idea how things like fridges, cars, bicycles, bridges, steerable needles, robots etc. work. It would be hard to get that kind of knowledge in many other careers.
A confident to understand how things work, find solutions to problems and fabricating. It’s a great mix of being creative yet rigorous in your implementation that few other subjects can offer.
Hi Katie, there’s so much you could do in engineering. There’s a lot of freedom at my work to try different things to see what does and doesn’t work. I can do that through computer models or by trying new things in the lab. 3D printing is a cool way for example to design something on the computer and have it printed quickly to see if it looks good in real life. Then you can change the design until you’re happy with it.
You get to be creative and use this creativity for something good like designing a medical device to help people.
