When I was working on my doctorate, I designed and developed a material for heart valves that can be put in the heart without surgery. There’s a lot of interest at the moment about valves that don’t need open heart surgery. That means old people who are too frail can get a valve instead of going under the knife.
I’m now working on a heart valve for children as they have different needs to adults but there aren’t many valves in the market that can help them.
Mostly custom implants for head and neck reconstruction, but I’ve also design facial prostheses, breast prostheses, arm/hand splints, leg prostheses, a bottom (yes, really), chest reconstruction models, a trauma simulation model which simulates somebody’s leg being blow off….. lot’s of interesting stuff. I’ve also been involved with the design of exoskeleton devices which have helped a friend compete on his mountain bike following an accident which paralysed one arm.
