      I’ve never been very good at computer aided design (CAD) and this year have learned a bit. Through projects that I’m working on with students I have become more familiar with how to get systems with motors and sensors to work in practice. It has been very interesting, rewarding and useful in each case.

      Hi Katie, that’s a good question! I’m working an idea for a new project with another person and it’ll involve some electronics which I’m not used to. So I’ve been doing a lot of research to get up to scratch with it. I quite enjoy it. I’ve recently bought myself a Raspberry Pi to get a better idea.

      I’ve had to learn how to use low cost 3D printer. I’ve worked with expensive machines for most of my career, but recently, I have run projects that have helped to find more low cost ways for the NHS to use 3D printing. This meant buying a cheap machine, learning how to alter the code that drives it, fabricate bits for the machine to make it work better and experiment with different types of materials that could make useful bits. It’s been pretty fun, but slightly annoying since it is difficult to get good results every time.
