Somebody with a creative drive, who has confidence to liaise with different specialties (such as surgeons) and who is keen to understand their terminology and expertise. A product design / engineering design background is useful. Somebody who is happy to step out of their comfort zone and get stuck into an engineering/design challenge.
I think that the best type of student is enthusiastic about the subject, patient, willing to listen to ideas and thoughtful.
Technical brilliance can be overrated if the other personal skills aren’t there too. It does help to enjoy maths and sciences!
In the medical field it also helps to be sensitive towards people with problems that may be embarrassing for them. Having the personal skills to understand the needs of patients is also very useful indeed.
Students who show interest and enthusiasm for the work are the most suitable. A student doesn’t have to be the smartest to work in the field, but they should show that they are keen to learn and are willing to research and think of ways to solve problems.
