That’s an interesting question! I think that it wouldn’t be very different. Engineers would still exist because we always have practical problems that need solving. So even if they weren’t trained or given the title, people would still be engineers by instinct.
Maybe more in the past, people have made discoveries and break-throughs without an education as an engineer as a physicist. I think this will continue because we like warm homes, electricity, ease of transport, good healthcare, new materials. Those examples applications will always draw people to using science and experience in a way that engineers do – even if engineers didn’t officially exist.
That’s a good question, like Matthew said, without engineers, people would still be trying to solve problems by building things because we need it everywhere.
I would definitely be weird if people didn’t design things! For example, open heart surgery was only possible once the heart and lung machine was invented.
