I think I tend to work for personal satisfaction most of the time – even though this sounds very selfish. At the same time I think it is very nice if what I do benefits society in some way.
It is as important to me that I don’t contribute to things that I think will harm future generations.
I think engineering attracts people who are passionate for detail and do it for a bit of personal satisfaction and the sense of achievement. I love the fact I can see the results of my work. However, this doesn’t always translate to being able to communicate and inspire future generations – it’s easy to get wrapped up in technical terms etc, which can be a barrier to some people understanding and getting involved. I therefore think it’s important to share knowledge in ways that make the field of engineering in medicine inspiring and accessible.
