I did my Degree Apprenticeship with GE Aviation in Gloucestershire. It was a 5 year course, studying at University part-time (1 day a week) whilst working for GE the remaining 4 days of the week. The company paid for all the tuition fees whilst also paying my salary. The Apprenticeship covered many other aspects such as additional training courses and areas for personal and professional development (such as IET membership). I was able to go into schools and run presentations and workshops on STEM subjects. I was also able to attend many of the large airshows around the country to engage with the general public and advertise the company (whilst enjoying the show). When not at Uni, I would be working on real projects, contributing towards the same projects as all the other engineers – helping to put some pretty cool planes into the sky. It was a fantastic training ground technically, professionally, and personally, and I would highly recommend it.
I’m doing a degree apprenticeship at Jaguar Land Rover but there’s lots of small and large companies offering them now. Think of companies that you’d want to work for and have a look on their website, they might offer some apprenticeships you wouldn’t expect – for example, Jaguar do mechanical engineering apprenticeships as well as software degree apprenticeships. Whatever you choose, degree apprenticeships are a great option!
Indeed apprenticeships and internships are great. I did an internship at Ad Astra Rocket Company. They are working in a plasma rocket for a mission to Mars. Learned lots about propulsion but also about reporting my work, health and safety, and work environments in general.
