Hi Rachel,
I have a friend that has just purchased a 3D printer. He told me the first thing you have to print is a cube to calibrate the printer (a bit boring but necessary for future prints). However, once calibrated I think I would print a case for my raspberry pi.
Joe.
I think it would probably take me a while to pick which idea I think is the best to have as a first. I’d feel I had to make it something cool or impressive, probably part for one of the small robots I’ve made.
Yes, Joe is right – calibration goes first.
I went to a talk by the Reprap people once (http://reprap.org/) – they have designed a 3D printer that can replicate itself! So maybe, the first thing I would print is another printer, which would then print another printer … and so on! In the end, I would have lots of printers to manufacture lots of the same item (maybe phone cases that I could then sell) or they could all print parts of a larger item – maybe a model plane or a super large 3D printer!! 😉
