I went to University to study Physics (which is what you need to do to be a weatherman), and discovered that I was more interested in light and optics. Once I knew that, I stayed at Uni to do a PhD, where you spend 3-4 years doing research on a particular topic — mine was to do with shining very bright lasers through optical fibres without them blowing up. Then, since I knew that I loved lasers, optics and physics, I’ve stayed doing that.
