I knew I liked girls since I was born. When I was a kid I remember having a crush on the princesses, not the princes in all those Disney films. I came to realise that for most other people, including my friends, it was the other way around – girls liked boys and vice versa.
I struggled trying to wrap my head around my feelings when I was a teenager. I felt like the odd one out and did not understand why I was ‘different’ to everyone else.
After I moved to the UK for university – I realised I wasn’t different after all. There are millions of people around the world just like me, who like people the same gender. This fact is becoming more and more accepted and normalised by the day.
As humans, we have so much variety. I like to view us as colours. We can label colours Red, Orange, Blue, Green etc. but we need to keep in mind that there is infinite possibility of colours in-between each, so many that we can’t even begin to name them all.
This is the same as sexuality, there is gay, straight and infinite possibilities in-between. Human brains and our feelings are complex and that is completely ok – people gotta chill and love who-ever they want! Life is too short to be judgmental of others or unhappy in yourself.
So, I didn’t choose a girlfriend over a boyfriend – my attraction to women is a result of genetics, it’s biological and something that is natural to me and a large part of our population. I never had a choice, it’s just how I am 😊
