Oh yes – most inventions come from people tinkering with bits and bobs in the workshop. Trevor Bailis invented the wind up radio in his shed from bits of a clock and bike dynamo. I used to take my things apart to see how they worked when I was a kid, but often couldn’t put them back together again, so I had lots of bits lying around my bedroom that I would make other things out of.
Right now, I don’t because I am working mainly in research. But when I worked on the field, yes! Even my favourite project, I made it mostly from scrap material.
We don’t get many left over materials from building cameras because all the parts come in exact and precise amounts. We do get scrapped circuit boards sometimes and I made a coaster for my desk out of one haha. I’ve also used tools at my work to fix or upgrade my own electronic devices 🙂
