Whether we like them or not they are coming. I think there is a long way to go before they are running on UK’s roads as we have so many subtleties and unique situations that the technology will need to deal with. For example I was driving past a play ground the other day where some kids were kicking a ball around, instinctively I slowed down because I suspected the ball may roll into the road… seconds later that exact thing happened and one of the kids ran out in front of me to retrieve it! He stopped when he saw me but if I had have reacted to that instead of pre-empted it I might not have been able to slow in time. Driverless cars’ AI systems will need to think like that, assessing the risk of millions of possibilities to be fully safe. But they’ll get there, eventually, and then the fun of driving may well be lost forever in time to a microprocessor; Top Gear will be Top Chip.
Although I really really enjoy driving, I look forward to a future with driverless cars. There are so many benefits like decreased and more efficient traffic which would reduce fuel consumption. I spend 1-2 hrs a day commuting back and forth from work, driverless cars would free up that time so that I could relax, read or even have a cheeky sleep in.
I’m excited about them, because for them to work well, it will be have to be perfect technology! I think that most of the fears people have will be addressed and there will be rules for how they will run. I don’t think they will be accepted by everyone and that’s ok. But I think that if they work, It’s a big advancement for us in telecommunications!
