      Hi 795canj26,

My favorite project so far will be when I worked with a team to bring upgrade a base station from 2G to 3G! 2G can only support taking phone calls, but 3G can support calls and the internet.

A base station is like the central hub that provides data for a user with a mobile phone, It also helps to keep the network so that your calls don’t drop.

In the work place I am working on a tank to keep things really cold. I’m designing it so no heat can get in. It’s 9 times colder than your freezer.

Its fun because I can be creative with designs and I’m working on it with a friend. When in the workshop we test the design whist having highly intellectual debates and listing to music.

I have worked on many amazing projects, but my favourite was one I had a supervisory role on.
It involved a team of 6th form students taking part in the Engineering Education Scheme, a STEM scheme run by EDT. I was their assigned professional engineer representing the Royal Navy as their “customer”. I set them the task of looking at the seal around the barrel of the RN’s Mk8 gun. This seal is meant to keep sea water out and protect the electronics inside the turret, but in very rough weather has been known to fail and the repair bill often exceed £10,o0o and can take the gun out of action for weeks.
After researching new materials and potential new designs for the primary and secondary seals the team came up with a simple answer to the problem. So simple I was amazed no one had thought of it before… a deflector attached to the barrel!
Their idea is currently being developed by the MOD for implementation on to existing guns and its future replacement.
I was so proud of the team and it proves even school students can make a genuine difference in engineering, given the opportunity to get in involved.

I worked on a project to ventilate the tunnels they are currently producing for cross rail in London. They were only temporary air handling units but needed to handle such a high velocity that it was a danger all of the sides would blow out of it. – it was just so different to other projects i’ve worked on.
