• Question: When did you first become interested in this area of engineering? Also I notice you like football so who is your favourite team?

      I support Manchester United which probably won’t make me that popular with many of you.

      I probably started to get interested in biomedical engineering when I was studying for my A-levels. I really loved studying biology but I also knew that I wanted to study engineering at university (and to become an engineer); I started to look into the kind of careers that were available afterwards and biomedical engineering combined my interest in physics and technology and biology. Medical and healthcare technology is one of the fastest growing industrial sectors as well and I knew I would be able to get a good job after I graduated (there are not enough engineers for the jobs available in this sector and that means there are good opportunities).

      My interest in acoustics and subsea engineering grew as I moved through my career as a royal navy weapons engineer. I started out as an apprentice, then became a specialist in supersonic missiles and their guidance systems. As I moved up through the ranks I became responsible for more equipment and I was interested in all of the amazing engineering in a warship (from the engines to the helicopter and, of course, the guns). After a while I was responsible for an entire department of engineers looking after all of the weapons and sensors, including the sonars and torpedoes. I would conduct complicated and challenging system trials and weapon tests as well as oversee the maintenance and repair of these complex systems. when I left the navy I saw the job at sonardyne and it ticked all my boxes, complex systems, advanced tech, a great team and some travel… I applied and got the job!

      At uni, I really enjoyed my courses about signals, antennas and electromagnetic waves. That’s what pointed me to telecommunications.

      My favourite team is Liverpool.

      I didn’t really know my job existed until I got offered an apprenticeship and moved into my current role.

      Newcastle United (I know, I know – but they are my home team!)
