During your first six months as an electrical building services engineer you would be expected to work with a more senior engineer to learn the basics of lighting design, fire alarm design, power distribution design and data system design. These are the 4 main areas an electrical engineer will deal with although there are specialist things you might get involved in like AV or lifts.

You would be expected to learn how to use the computer software we use for calculations. Relux for lighting design (it’s a free programme so you can even give it a try at home!) Amtech for power and cable sizes, and we also use CAD (Computer aided design) packages to draw the plans to be used on the construction site.
