Yes, I do have to wear a helmet whenever I have to go underground. Not a major risk, just to make sure we don’t bump our heads with the pipes that are usually hanging from the ceiling. If you are wondering why I have to go there is because the ATLAS detector is 100m underground and it is there to control the large amounts of radiation that is emitted when protons collide inside the detector.
If I’m going into a part of site where there’s construction going on, or into our linear accelerator then I have to wear a safety hat/high vis jacket. In ISIS we go to great lengths to manage risk to make sure nobody gets hurt, so although there are hazards about you’re never really in any danger…
Sometimes I wear a hard hat. I always a radiation badge (a device to see how much radiation might be around) when I work on a beam-line or detector. I have to follow very strict instructions about getting into certain parts of the labs at which I work. I’m responsible for safety in my lab at work – so I have to make sure my colleagues are safe from lasers, high voltages, radiation, dangerous gases, etc.
When I’m at a construction site checking out the work that’s been done or making notes on what the design will be I have to wear a hard hat, steel toe cap boots, and a high viability jacket. Some construction sites will even ask you to wear gloves and goggles it depends on the health and safety code at that particular site.
Visiting site is only a part of my job though so I don’t have to wear all that gear every day, just once a week at the most.
