I think kids/the general public have a bit of a skewed idea of what Engineers do (I get the impression people think we mend cars/photocopiers/boilers) when in fact the five of us on I’m an Engineer spend our time designing complicated scientific equipment and systems in labs/at computers.
I think it’s good to get schools involved in engineering (AND to get Engineers involved with school visits etc.) so kids can find out what we ACTUALLY do and hopefully be inspired to take up careers as engineers (especially as there is a skills shortage!)…
I second what Ben has said but I would also like to add that schools need to teach children that they don’t have to be Stephen Hawking to actually be part of these great experiments. All you have to do is work hard and find the engineering job or (physics) that suites you best and you will definitely do great in it.:)
Schools should get more involved. Have you heard of the Bloodhound SSC project? It is a British project aiming to build a 1000mph car. It has loads of resources for schools about engineering.
