So ISIS (the facility I work at) is, lets say, a ‘neutron factory’. People come and use our neutrons to produce experiments. Research performed at ISIS includes looking into hydrogen fuel storage for cars, new washing powders which allow us to wash at lower temperatures (both helping the environment) and examining ancient artefacts that are too delicate to be removed from the rocks they’re trapped in (helping our understanding of history etc.)
Safety is a bit part of Building Services. It’s not just the fire alarm systems. We also design emergency lighting so people can still move around if the power goes out and back up generators which allow hospitals to still work if the power goes out.
The technologies used in high energy physics are not being created with saving lives in mind. They are, however, taken advantage of in other fields. The technologies used in the detectors or accelerators are actually used in the medical field where they are used to build machines that could be used for medical imaging and/or treating cancer.
