Good question – tbh I don’t think any of the ‘educational’ extra curricular stuff I did at school helped me get into the position I am in now e.g. there was this after school thing for clever kids on Thursdays that I went to for a term, but it didn’t really give me any better grades etc.

Extra curricular stuff is more important when you’re at uni (e.g. ‘Formula student’ – google it – is a lot more work than other projects you could do BUT it looks much more attractive to an employer).

Try and be a rounded individual though e.g. you are busy in your spare time but you do things like sports or other activities. If an employer looks at your CV and sees nothing but engineering and extra curricular engineering stuff they’ll probably think there’s something wrong with you!

When I was school I did trampolining, it was great fun but probably not essential to being an engineer. As Ben says it doesn’t all have to be science, people want to work with people not machines!
