Best project I’ve done so far was designing a beam profile monitor – a gizmo which tells us the shape of our proton beam.
The scientist gave me the actual monitor (which looks kinda like a circuit board) and told me that it had to sit in a vacuum vessel and rotate between 0 and 90 degrees with a set of electric field plates beneath it.
I did the rest i.e. designed the vessel and worked out how to stop the monitor at 0 and 90 degrees etc. and got it made. It’s now installed in our synchrotron and runs like a dream! (In fact, the scientist is planning to buy some more!)
