Yes, I’m a doctorate student, so for the 4 years that I’m carrying out my research, I will not have any pay rise, I will get a fixed stipend for the duration of my research which if you are not doing a doctorate you will have the opportunity to get a pay rise. However, this is what I wanted to do, also can’t complain much, all my fees are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and my industrial sponsor, also my stipend is not bad and I can live with it comfortably. I know that I will have loads of good opportunities. 🙂
Like Faranak, I am a doctoral student (I’m doing a PhD) and we’re on a lower salary than a lot of engineers. We also don’t have fixed working ours which is great at times, but it means sometimes I can work very long hours so I give up my evenings/weekends sometimes.
The reason I do it is because I love my job and I’ll have so many opportunities when I’m done. I think to get anywhere in life that you want, there will always be some sacrifices. You just have to find the ones you’re willing to make to get what you want.
