I would say you’ve got to do what’s right for you. Some people just don’t like studying and going to school so an apprenticeship is the right option for them. Others love learning at school and what to keep doing it so may prefer university. It’s also depends on what you want from your future career – there are some things you need to go to university for (including some aspects of engineering) but others don’t. To do what I do, you have to go to university (in fact, I’m still here!): you have to do at least one degree to be a researcher at university if not two before you can start a PhD.

It depends on what type of person you are.

An apprenticeship really suited the type of person I am and the type of work I do, knowing how to design “things” efficiently means having a great knowledge of how to make them.

I can’t really add much more than Mark or Shruti have already said. Just really depends on you.
