Before this job I was a design engineer at another company for 8 years and before that I worked as an assistant in a quality department for a year so 3 engineering jobs in total so far in my career
8. Engineer and Senior Engineer – Automotive Industry 28-37 years old (In the automotive industry I’ve had 3 different roles i.e. Quality, Continuous Improvement, Business Development).
7. Project Engineer – Petrochemical – 24-28 years old
6. Engineer – Casting Company – 22-24 years old
5. B&Q – 19-22 years old
4. Labourer – 18 years old
3. Burger King – 16-18 years old
2. Delivered Milk 11-19 years old
1. Paper Boy – 11-12 years old
I have only had one full-time job in engineering straight out of university when I graduated, working as a Structural/Mechanical design engineer since June 2018. Whilst studying I did delivery driving part-time.
I have had a few jobs over the years
1. Lifeguard and swimming teacher (while i was at school and studying)
2. Graduate student at an alumina refinery
3. Mud engineer (designing and running drilling fluids for oil rigs)
4. Offshore chemist
5. Account manager
6. Back to being an offshore chemist 😀
7. Technologist at an oil company
All have been great fun and i have learnt a lot from my experiences! no matter what the job be positive and learn as much as you can from each experience, you never know what you might find if you keep an open mind.
1 – Co-op – Shop Assistant when I was 14
2 – Denverglaze – When I was 15
3 – Millbrook Proving Ground – Proving Engineer & Powertrain Engineer – Whilst at University
4 – Blue Arrow – Recruitment Specialist
5 – Constructserv – My own contruction consultancy
6 – Chubb Fire & Security – Fire Engineer
7 – Sensetech Systems – Technical Director – Life Safety Systems
8 – EA-RS Fire Engineering – Regional Director – Northern Division – Life Safety
I was unlucky that when I left university the automotive industry was not in a good place so I moved into recruitment which was a very good industry to work in, I had my own construction consultancy where i developed the love for buildings and construction. I was lucky enough to then start my long career in Life Safety Engineering which I still do today
Never give up on your dream to be an engineer, sometimes the journey make take a different route but you will get there 🙂
I worked in a car garage (my first ever job), then in another car garage 🙂
Went to uni and got a job in construction, designing and supervising piping and air conditioning jobs.
Then did an internship in a rocket company working in Plasma propulsion.
Did more research in materials for hydrogen cars and energy storage materials
Did also some teaching and tutoring in between.
Then got my current job in civil aerospace.
