How many people have said that they like your work?

Quite a lot of people actually and some people have learnt from the way I have written code. Due to being taught the newer patterns and methods for coding, i have often taught others those patterns which is nice and also shows that even senior engineers still learn new things. Learning never stops.

My family and friends don’t really understand my work because they are not engineers but they are very proud of what I do and what I have achieved and some of them think that what I do is interesting. Not sure that’s the same as liking what i do though!

Hi, not sure if you mean my own personal work or if you mean my workplace so I’ll answer both.

We have meetings every week with the team to run through what has been good and what has been bad. If people like something I have done then this is when they would tell me, i can also get told that i have done something that people havent liked.

Most of the people i work with like where we work as we have a small team who get along really well

Some people don’t like wind turbines, but most people I have come across do. I have had lots of comments from people saying that they like them, and they ask questions to find out more about them and my job.

Most people I talk to are fascinated by the work I do. I find that trying to explain a project I am working on to a friend or family member is the ultimate test, because if you cant explain it simply to a non-engineer, you don’t properly understand the project yourself!

I work on a tourist attraction so I am very lucky a lot of people say they like my work! It always makes me smile to see we are making an experience that people enjoy.

I am very lucky because what I do is easy to explain, but other people work on things that are much more complicated. That doesn’t mean their work is any less valuable, but they may not be able to explain it and so they will get fewer compliments. It is important not to attribute your self worth to what others say about you (or your test results).

I don’t think anyone ever said it like that. When I talk about some of the projects I’ve been involved with, there are usually questions that show people are interested, and some people assume that working in the space industry is super-exciting all the time, so there are comments about that. But like any discipline, there are good days and worse days, slow times and exciting times, frustrating meetings, mistakes, learning, disagreements and lost opportunities. What I like about my work is being able to manage in each of those situations. I don’t think that is visible or clear, so my work is often a bit ‘behind the scenes’. Everyone in a team matters though.

Generally, when I talk about the company I work for and show them photos of the cars, they like what they see!! But this is obviously a team effort!

For personal work, we al make an effort to say if someone has put in extra effort or has done a great job. So usually, I get good recognition for my efforts. However, sometimes doing what is unpopular is the right thing to do! Especially when you get into management roles!

Most people will never get to see my work because it is computer code and tiny electronics which goes inside a box and then inside another box and then inside a vehicle or an aeroplane. But when I tell them that the line of code I wrote and the tiny electronic component I soldered makes ones of the largest planes in the world fly – they start to see why I get so excited about engineering 🙂

I have been very lucky to have people who support me and comment on have positive and hard working I am. I always make sure to be ahead of the game:D This is due to the support I get plus the support I give back. We always work hard due to the motivation given around the company:D

Many former classmates and professors, old colleagues and friends keep telling me how nice is what I do and how interesting. They are really supportive as my job can be quite demanding and there are difficult days as in every job but it is interesting and I give my best every day.

Same with previous jobs I’ve had. Science and tech is fascinating and people want to listen more and more 🙂

It is not often that anyone will come up and say directly to one’s face, “I really like that piece of work you have done”. But there may be indirect ways in which the praise may be given.

I was once tasked with writing a book on the subject of Combined Heat and Power (CHP). At the outset I knew very little about the complete topic but lots about the component parts. The book was designed to be read by non-specialist people.

When the book was published I was at a meeting where a gentleman, who was a long-standing CHP specialist, held up the book and described it as, “The best book he had seen on this topic for a long while”. For me that praise was priceless.

Quite often I get people interested in the work I do and asking questions about it. As engineers, it is an important skill to be able to describe the work we are doing to anyone in a way that they are able to understand.

Because my job has involved me in lots of international travel and sometimes I would not know which country I would be in from one month to the next many people think because of that it is a really good job. To be honest in the beginning it was a fantastic experience, and I absolutely love being in new places and having a job that lets me meet and work with new and varied people quite often is fantastic. The strange thing is though that being in planes on long flights I find really boring. I would not change it though as it has been rewarding on so many levels.
