Family and friends outside of work have said that it is interesting and they think I am clever which I say I am not really! People in work such as my manager say that I am doing well.

Many people I talk to don’t always understand exactly what i do but those in my team are impressed with my work but they also help me to become a better engineer. I do the same for them when necessary.

I tell my family and friends about my work but it is a very complicated process so i try to explain as best i can so that they can understand.
Most people i tell dont realise how complex everything is within the power industry

My family and friends don’t particularly understand it, especially all the technical jargon and stuff. But other engineers and work colleagues that do understand my work, have been really impressed in the number of man-hours I put into it, even outside of work in my own time. I like my work to be of the highest standard as I am a perfectionist, so dedicate as much time as it needs to it!

My project has made it onto the TV a few times. People are usually interested to hear about what we do as submarine rescue is very much a specialised area that only a few people have any experience of.

They ask how I don’t want to buy all the cars I work on!! Working around cool stylish cars all day can be difficult…. especially when they cost way more than what I would be able to spend!!
But I still get to see them and maybe get a test drive!!

That it’s really important! Electric vehicles are the future for mass transportation, so it’s really important we get the battery technology as good as we can to improve the vehicles and uptake from the public.

Sophie Louth answered on 4 May 2020:
Lots of people know someone who has had a hip replacement, so they normally tell me about them when I tell them I work on them. It can be interesting but to be honest they often don’t really have anything interesting to say. But I think people are often interested to hear about medical engineering, because it isn’t a field that is talked about much and we don’t often think about where the doctors get all the equipment they use every day.

Barney Weston answered on 4 May 2020:
When they figure out what I do, most people think it’s pretty cool. My job is a bit like an episode of “how it’s made” – I go to all sorts of different factories and see what they do.
My daughter, though, thinks that all I do is write emails. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of truth in that, which is not so cool.

Katie Sparks answered on 4 May 2020:
My family think I’m really smart to be doing what I do, but then it’s so different from what they do that I guess it can appear that way.
Personally, I think I’m fairly average compared to a lot of the people I work with. We all work hard and generally do our best and help each other. You can learn a lot from a lot of people too.I do need to know a lot of things before I can do a lot of my job, but I did have to learn it all. I sometimes forget things and after a long break (like Christmas holidays) it can take a little while to get back into things.
I think my job is like most jobs – from the outside, if you don’t know and understand how things work then it looks really difficult (and interesting), but from the inside it makes sense because you’re doing it.

People in general think it is interesting and like to ask questions about projects, how certain things work, or something they have seen on tv or in the papers involving science and technology.
As I work with jet engines people are keen to know what’s behind the scenes in air travel. I work in safety and it’s reassuring for them (and for me) knowing all the effort people do to bring people to a safe destination.

People have always helped keep me motivated by commenting on how positive and hard working I am! I always make sure i am ahead of the game and people are always there to support me. I always make sure to support them back as we all work to be better by helping one another:D

David Linsell answered on 5 May 2020:
The role and scope of engineering can be baffling to non-engineers. One of the things I try and do is explain engineering to non-engineers, in a easily understandable manner. The response is often one of wide-eyed amazement.
In summer 2019, I was invited to the Channel Islands to give talks on “Power from Poo”. As part of the visit I was invited for an interview, live on BBC Radio Guernsey. The interviewer knew very little about engineering but after 45-50 minutes understood lots about sewage treatment and making Power from Poo. She was amazed and very grateful for the clear explanations. -

Generally they think designing boats are really cool, then I go into more detail and it usually goes over their heads so just talk about the boats…

Colin Donaldson answered on 11 May 2020:
People have said that my work is interesting. Because what I am involved with influences so many people, and helps thousands in their day to day lives, how we go about this and improving the rail infrastructure is a popular topic to others.
