Well not sure about replace but we are already starting to supplement traditional non renewable energy sources with new ones – hybrid and electric cars are a good start!
I hope so. We’re going to have to tackle it if we want to reduce our CO2 emissions. That might be partly replacing it with electric cars, and partly changing how much we need. So, encouraging people to share car journeys more, or cycle. We could make it easier and cheaper to take the train, and perhaps use internet technology to make some journeys unnecessary. For example we could move more towards people working from home if their work can be done just as well that way, then there would be less car commuting in the mornings and evenings. But I think a lot of it is being held back not by the technology but by lack of infrastructure and lack of political/public pressure to get it done.
I think we are certainly on the way to replacing petrol, hybrid and electric cars seem to be getting more popular, cheaper and more usable every day, with more infrastructure appearing like more charging points in car parks.
I’m not sure it will totally replace petrol though.
