In the purest sense of the word, and knowing Sheldon he’s probably thinking along these lines, engineers are not scientists, they are engineers.
Engineering is generally much more applied than the more theoretical sciences, which focus on hypothesis generation and testing. Science and Engineering are related, but they are not the same, their Venn diagrams overlap, but they are not stacked.
I’m not saying either are superior, and in think to really make the best outcome in most projects you need both sets of skills. I’m primarily a scientist, working in an engineering field and facing engineering problems, but I couldn’t do my job without the “proper engineers”!

Haha. Well I consider myself to be both – I studied physics and now work as an engineer. Engineers apply science to real world applications and when it comes to research, the different between a Research Scientist and a Research Engineer is very small.

I’m not trying to be a Scientist, although I make use of the scientific method every day. Engineers get to take scientific discoveries into the day-to-day world, and make stuff that means everyone gets the benefits of the science. I think that’s a really cool thing to be doing.
