It’s not quite that simple. It really depends – different universities will require different school grades and apprenticeship schemes will also have different requirements.

There are a lot of routes to engineering. If you can get good GCSE grades in maths and physics, and if you can study a relevant option, like Design and Technology / Resistant Materials / Electronics, that will help a lot for A levels and applying for a Degree at University.
But University isn’t the only way, you could take an Apprenticeship or some qualifications at College. My brother did a City and Guilds course in Engineering which was a much better path for him than a degree. It’s important to pick a path that suits your skills and the way that you learn.

As Eleanor says there’s different routes into engineering so it very much depends whether you want to study at university (more academic route) or do an apprenticeship (more hands on, gain qualifications alongside working).

I think generally Maths and physics are a good call but there are so many routes into engineering including apprenticeships which you can start following GCSE’s and in that case, having good GCSE grades in maths and English are required although even then, there are opportunities to ensure you have those skills whilst doing an apprenticeship.
