Thank you for your question. I loved to build things when I was younger, I had lots of lego and mechano sets. This combined with a love of science led me to study Engineering.

I also liked Lego and mechano. I think, the first time I heard about engineering was watching Star Trek on TV 🙂 Somehow, the engineers always found a way to save the ship at the last minute – very inspiring! I think science fiction movies and books really got me inspired to become an engineer.

I think there is a common theme here, I also loved building things with meccano when I was younger. At school I enjoyed maths and physics and I found inspiration when reading about Richard Feynman and how he was a key member in the investigation of the space shuttle ‘Challenger’ disaster, it taught me a lot about thinking from first principles to solve real world problems.

Just to continue the theme, I loved to build things and design things. I liked project work and solving problems. I was inspired by the huge pieces of infrastructure around me!

I loved cars and Formula 1 in particular, I really wanted to be part of it but didn’t consider that engineering would be an option for me. It was only when I saw a degree in motorsport engineering that I realised it was!

I didn’t have one specific moment of inspiration. I enjoyed making stuff in general, but I wasn’t specifically into construction toys and I liked doing sewing and painting too. This wasn’t exactly my obvious destination; I worked out gradually this suited me really well, around the age of 17 with a lot of help from my teachers.
Today what inspires me is that engineers of all different types take this skillset and throw it at thousands of different problems. Together we fix and optimise and shape the world. Almost every object you have touched today has had an engineer work on it in some way to make it better. For me I get to be one of the design engineers behind a thing I love, bicycles. If you’re into a sport or music or cooking or whatever, there’s almost certainly a design engineer behind your favourite things too.

I was just always good at science and maths at school. I didn’t know what job I wanted to do but then I got offered a graduate scheme position in engineering which allowed me to try out different things and I found I loved it!
