I loved Science at school – I remember making a wind tunnel in Physics which was fun and loved chemical reactions in Chemistry. The worst thing I remember was the teacher bringing in sheep lungs in Biology!

I wasn’t a biology fan either, I didn’t want to dissect things….I did like physics though and our physics teacher used to be a bomb disposal expert and so he was just very cool of course (in our eyes). Everyone loves a van de graf generator and making their hair stick on end……Along with Maths, I loved physics. Science explains a lot of what goes on around you, it tied in with my maths and just made the world more understandable.

I did physics and loved it, I was a huge fan of quantum mechanics and my most memorable moment was when our lecturer showed us how to arrive at the uncertainty principle using the mathematical theory of operators. To see something that I was struggling to grapple with (philosophically speaking) explained so beautifully in mathematical terms was amazing! I never liked chemistry though, I found it too messy! I like it a lot more now, especially when I accompany my daughter at the science centre and they show us all the fun you can have with chemical reactions. What I think I liked the most about learning science is that it made reflect on the big questions like “how do we know what we know?”, “what is reality?”, “what are the limits to our knowledge?” and stuff like that.

One of the best things that I found is that I was able to experiment in areas that I found most interesting. We were always encouraged in physics to test things out. One of my overriding memories using diodes and creating circuits, the other was flames and exploding things in Chemistry! I have to admit to not being a particular biology fan though and was one of the few not to do it at GCSE.

I would say the day I nearly set my friend’s hair on fire (by accident!!) with a Bunsen burner is quite memorable… Lots of it was fun though. I enjoyed learning about how the world worked whilst getting to blow things up along the way!
